THE WEBB CENTER’S
ARTS FOR KIDS PROGRAM

This after-school club, led by the Webb Center’s professional staff, introduces high school students to technical theatre concepts and skills with hands-on instruction. “Ninjas” learn the technical names of stage equipment and theatre terminology. They are introduced to theatre lighting instruments and elements of lighting design. The students are also exposed to the functionality of the fly-system, which is a counterbalance weight system that allows the theatre to “fly” in and out various set pieces and backdrops for a production from the space above the stage. They gain knowledge on the sound system, including how sound is created, conducted through the digital equipment, balanced and then emitted through the speaker arrays.

At the end of the four-year Theater Ninjas high school program, students will graduate with a full set of technical theatre skills.

Ninja projects will include the creation of lighting designs and stage plots. They will earn hands-on experience by helping load-in/strike touring shows in the Webb Center’s season; having the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional artists and their road crews. Ninjas will also provide technical assistance during school events working the sound and light boards as well as more advanced functions like stage management with guidance from Webb Center staff.

Goals

The goals of the Theater Ninja program are to foster an understanding of technical theatre terminology, equipment, functionality, usage and proper maintenance using STEM concepts as a basis. The nurturing educational environment provided by the Webb Center’s staff ensures that students learn at their own pace, work in a collaborative setting, and gain confidence in the practical skills being taught.

At the end of the four-year high school program, students will graduate with a full set of technical theatre skills. They will be able to operate a fly-system in a safe manner, create a stage plot and lighting design for stage productions ranging from orchestral programs and theatrical performances to country music concerts and dance performances. The students can enter college stage production classes with confidence or elect to get jobs working in university, non-profit or commercial theatres.
