The Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts recently has officially announced an expansion and remodeling plans for the 600-seat theater.
A grant was provided by the John K. and Lynne D. Boyer Family Foundation, a major contributor to several renovations at the Center and other building projects in Wickenburg – including the Crossroads Learning Center at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
The project will begin in April and will enlarge the building by an additional 4,100 square feet. The existing lobby will be greatly expanded with a higher ceiling, new lighting and audio/visual capabilities.
Other features incorporated into the new square footage are a separate catering service area, ticket office, designated volunteer room and new storage space. The design also incorporates a 1,000-square-foot wrap-around covered veranda in front of the entrance to the lobby.
Other major aspects of the expansion include doubling the size of the ladies’ restroom and increasing the size of the men’s restroom. The box office space will include two indoor and one outdoor will-call windows.
The architect, Joseph Groff, CCBG Architects, Inc. of Phoenix, took great care in the design of the new exterior of the expanded building that will be constructed out of the same block used throughout the Wickenburg High School campus, and the lines of the expansion will follow the existing curve of the facility. A 16-foot glass wall across the front of the addition with three doors will welcome the public into the space, and a covered veranda will provide protection from the elements.
The Webb Center is most grateful for this generous grant from the John K. and Lynne D. Boyer Family Foundation. “Our goal with the expanded lobby project is to better serve the needs of the school district, students, our patrons and the Wickenburg community by creating a versatile space that can be used as a gathering place prior to performances, an additional performance venue, lecture hall and rehearsal room,” stated Cathy Weiss, executive director of the Webb Center, in gratefully accepting the generous grant from the John K. and Lynne D. Boyer Family Foundation.
When completed, the lobby space will be large enough to host a seated dinner for 120 or a reception for up to 400 people.
The entire project will be completed by the first week of November before the Webb Center begins its 2014-2015 season. An alternative entrance will be used to access the Webb Center for Wickenburg High School events and Camp Imagination scheduled during construction.
