Petronio premieres new dance in Wickenburg

Choreographer Stephen Petronio is currently in residence in Wickenburg creating a new contemporary dance for the Stephen Petronio Company.  The 12 member company has been living and working at the Flying E Guest Ranch since October 21, rehearsing the new piece at the Benner-Nawman Warehouse Studio.

Petronio  is the Artistic Director and founder of the 28 year-old Stephen Petronio Company. Based in New York City, the company  has performed in 26 countries throughout the world. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Petronio is widely regarded as one of the leading choregraphers of his generation for his abiliy to blend original music, visual art and fashion. A dancer for 38 years, Pertronio initially studied pre-med at college.

Petronio has planned a full evening of dance for the residency’s conclusion on Friday, November 2 at 7:30 pm on the Webb Center stage. The performance will feature the premiere of the dance developed while in residency, titled “Like Lazarus Did.” Choroegraphed to orginal music by composer Ryan Lott, the dance is centered around the theme of resurrection and transformation through time. After leaving Wickenburg, the company will continue to work on the new piece before performing at the Joyce Theater next spring. Other dances from their repertoire will be shown, including “The Architechure of Loss” and exerpts from “Underland.”
