The Webb Center is presenting an unique and impressive array of worldwide artists during the 2012-2013 season, titled the “International Series.”
Consisting of five stunning performances, the series will include a diverse selection of genres, including African drumming, Russian ballet, bagpipes, Latin flamenco and traditional Mexican music.
One of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi will perform in November. The company combines the thunderous sound of drums with breathtakingly graceful dances to take audiences on a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping journey.
Direct from Moscow, the Russian National Ballet Theatre will perform Swan Lake, the classic tale of a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. This enchanting ballet will be brought to life on stage in February with stunning costumes, exquisite choreography and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score.
March features two outstanding performances in two very different genres. The Black Watch and the Band of the Scots Guard celebrates over 300 years of military pageantry with stirring bagpipe and drum music. Traditional folk songs, military tunes and precision marches are combined with colorful ceremony in a powerful performance. Later in the month, flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook returns with his energetic quintet. Cook’s exotic rumba music is an intoxicating fusion of Latin rhythms and sultry world beats.
Latin Grammy Award-winner Lila Downs will perform her dramatic reinvention of traditional Mexican music for audiences in April. With a striking voice and magnetic personality, Downs fuses Ranchera songs and original compositions with blues, jazz, and soul.
