This Saturday, the 3rd annual “Guys Who Grill” competition will be burning up Wickenburg. This unique event is open to the public and features all male teams competing in grilling, smoking, and barbecuing categories. Because all men grill, and all men think they are the best!
“Guys Who Grill” will be held at the Wickenburg Community Center, 160 North Valentine Street, on March 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The public can purchase “All-You-Can-Sample” tickets for $10 at the event. Children 5 years and under enter the event for free. There will be live entertainment, fresh food, and beer for sale.
The teams compete in categories for best chicken, beef pork and other. Judges have been selected from the community to award those prizes and their identities will remain private. But the grand prize is the “People’s Choice” award. This prize is awarded to the grilling team that collects the most donations throughout the competition. Each team will have a donation container at their booth. If you love their food, vote for them by dropping in a dollar or two. All the funds go the the “Arts for Kids” program at the Webb Center.
This year, 13 teams are participating, with new grillers and returning favorites like the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Keller and Hickey, and El Ranchero. There will be a variety of meats to sample, including ribs, brisket, chicken, tri-tip, pork, shrimp and more.
To help support the team with expenses, money has been raised through an Inter-State Challenge. “So many of us winter her in Wickenburg and call another state home,” said Lana Johnson, Board Member of the Webb Center.
“In light of that, we put a friendly rivalry together between the states to see which state could raise the most money. The funds will offset the griller’s expenses and whatever is left over goes straight to the children.”
The Inter-State Challenge involves the following states: Colorado, Pennsylvania, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, Arizona, and Nevada, as well as Canada. Flags from each state will fly proudly at the event.
“Guys Who Grill” is presented by the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts. Proceeds from the event benefit the Webb Center’s “Arts for Kids” educational programs; for more information call (928) 684-6624.
